More than 200,000 taxpayers in Maine have begun receiving stimulus checks worth $850.

Maine governor Janet Mills proposed giving back more than half the state budget surplus in direct payments.

About 858,000 Mainers will receive checks in installments of 200,000 each week, thanks to the support of state lawmakers.

Maine residents have until October 31, 2022, to file their 2021 state tax return and receive their refund check.

Persons earning less than $100,000 and couples earning less than $200,000 can expect to receive the direct payment this month or in early July.

In addition, several other states like Indiana and Delaware have approved similar tax rebate plans.
