Two years of $500 direct payments to Americans - see the exact month they will be sent

The American people will receive a total of $12,000 in monthly payments over the next two years. 

As of now, $500,000 has been approved by the Des Moines City Council for the program, which will benefit 110 residents.

Mid-Iowa Health Foundation is leading the universal basic income program, which is expected to cost $2.5 million. 

Nalo Johnson, the company's CEO, told Axios that roughly $1.8 million in funds have been raised.

A monthly direct payment of $500 will also be launched this year - with the first round of stipends going out in February. 

In spite of the fact that the program will be available to low-income residents, the exact income barriers have not yet been announced.

In addition, it is unclear if there will be an application process or how participants will be selected. 

By reducing stressors associated with poverty, the pilot aims to improve how members of

the community show up in the workforce and support the economic health of the community. 

There are dozens of cities and states across the country offering UBI and conducting studies on its effects on poverty.

Other UBI programs 

Mountain View, California, residents can apply for a $500 UBI program, for example.

An eligible family of three has an annual income of $44,750 in 2021.

City officials expect to open applications in late summer or early fall.

Three thousand Los Angeles families will receive $1,000 a month as part of another program in California. 

Fox 11 Los Angeles reports that they started receiving payments in January.

In June, more than 100 residents in Ithaca, New York, received their first monthly payments of $450.
