Illinois is in the morning on Tuesday. Last night, the skies were gray, and our hearts ached for the Casten family.

A statement from Rep. Sean Casten's office says 17-year-old Gwen Casten has passed away.

Gwen (17), the beloved daughter of Congressman Casten, died this morning. During this painful time, we will not comment on the Castens' request for privacy."

Casten's home in Downers Grove was called to police just before 7 a.m. police found a 17-year-old girl unresponsive at the residence.

Police are investigating the cause of death. Casten, who is seeking re-election in the 6th Congressional District,

faces fellow representative Marie Newman and Nicor Gas technician Charles Hughes in the June 28 Democratic primary.

Both Casten and Newman's campaigns have pulled their TV ads.

Sean and Kara Casten and their entire family are in my prayers following the tragic loss of their daughter.

In the case of Casten's campaign, Gwen's death is especially poignant since she interned for his 2020 campaign

And most recently appeared in an advertisement about turning 18 and voting for the first time.

Despite Casten's support for abortion rights, gun restrictions, and ethics reform, Gwen urged voters to vote for her,

Not just for anyone. Sean Casten, she said. His representative. He's my father, though."

A message to supporters was sent by Casten after he voted last week in favor of gun safety legislation.
