More than one million Americans have already filed their taxes for the year 2021 by the April 18 deadline.

You can still receive up to $2,000 per child for 2022 if you qualify for child tax credits (CTC) worth up to $3,600 per child.

Congress did not extend the higher child tax credit amounts, so the CTCs return to $2,000 per child.

How do you apply?

In order to receive child tax credit payments in 2022, families must wait until next year's tax season.

Those filing a Form 1040 tax return can claim the CTC by entering the number of children and dependents.

Your child must be under the age of 18 and have a Social Security number to qualify for the child tax credit.
