There are just hours left for eligible Americans to apply for direct payments worth $500 each month

Many Americans have just hours left to apply for a guaranteed income scheme that will see them receive $500 checks every month.

Level Up is a program introduced by Mount Vernon, New York officials.

Residents will receive payments monthly and the deadline to apply is August 5 at 11:59 p.m.

Direct income schemes are only available to households earning at least $15,000 a year.

The income cap varies by household size, but families must make less than 80% of the county's average income.

To participate in the universal basic income pilot program, applicants will be randomly selected.

Successive applicants are expected to be notified by the end of the month.

A survey about households' overall health and well-being will also be administered to those selected for the program.

"We are committed to building a dignity economy for Mount Vernon's residents," said Mayor Shawyn Patterson Howard.

"I fully support residents receiving guaranteed incomes.

I look forward to joining a coalition of innovative and forward-thinking mayors who are not afraid to ask for critical resources."

According to the Rockland Westchester Journal News, the program costs $1.2 million.

The control group of 275 people won't receive the monthly payments, but will receive a $30 gift card for responding to surveys.

Mountain View, California, residents can apply for a $500 universal basic income program.

For a family of three, the maximum annual income is $44,750 in 2021.

There is expected to be an application period from mid- to late summer, according to the city.
