The origins of the holidays go back to the local observances of soldiers with neglected graves during the civil war.

The first observation of what would become the Memorial Day, according to some historians

took place in Charleston, in S.C., on the site of a horse racing track that the Confederates

had transformed into prison holding prisoners of the 'Union. The blacks of the city organized 

a funeral of the prisoners of the deceased Union and built a fence around the site

wrote the historian of Yale, David Blight, in the New York Times in 2011.
