Nine million Americans may receive unexpected letters in the mail containing unclaimed payments of up to $3,600

Those who qualify for cash benefits from the IRS have received surprise letters containing details of their benefits.

Nine million households have received written notifications about the untouched funds.

Fortune reports that those who did not file their 2021 tax returns are

Receiving correspondence from the government regarding tax credits and rebates.

In a statement, IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said: "Even if they are not required to

file a tax return, they may still be eligible for several important credits."

The letters will remind people of their potential eligibility and steps they can take so they don't overlook these tax credits.

The Child Tax Credit went up from $2,000 to $3,600 due to

the Covid-related American Rescue Plan Act last year, Fortune reported.

It is exactly this money that non-filers may not be receiving.

Moreover, a third stimulus check of up to $1,400 was included in the bill for eligible taxpayers and their dependents.

The benefits are available to those who do not need to file a tax return,

likely due to low income, but filing taxes is a prerequisite to receiving them.

Anyone who has yet to file a federal tax return still has a chance to take advantage of this tax relief.
